Five stampless folded letters; 4 from 1807-1808 and one from 1820. All mailed from Stratford, England and all addressed to Jonathan Chitwood at Woodbrook estate in Port Arlington, Ireland. Relatively high postage rates noted from 1 shilling 4 pence to 1s 6p. Woodbrook House was where Jonathan Swift wrote most of Gulliver’s Travels and was listed for sale in 2007 and a newspaper advertisement for its sale is included with this lot. (Image) (image002)

Switzerland historical shipwreck cover. The Panamanian steamer Finance owned by the US government outward bound from Colón, Panama was in a collision with the White Star liner Georgic inward bound for New York, off Sandy Hook. The Finance sank within ten minutes with the loss of four lives. Next day a tug picked up a single bag of mail. A label was applied on the reverse stating “The piece of mail herewith was recovered from the wreck of steamer Finance, which was sunk through collision with steamer Georgic, Thursday Nov. 26, 1908.” (Image) (image002)
