Pages from a U.S. Postal History Collection. Approximately ninety covers and cards mounted on pages and described in German, 1870s to 1970. Focus is on rates, types of mail service, auxiliary markings, and customary use of stamped envelopes and postal cards. Seems to have been taken from a much larger collection of covers. United States original holding from 1845 to 1893 in a medium box. Over twenty-five covers are nicely organized and annotated on quadrille pages in an old binder. Some highlights include 1861 cacheted Patriotic, Confederate States, and Louisville KY Devil cachet advertising 1875 from Barbaroux & Co. Likewise some small Illinois town cancels from Big Foot Prairie in McHenry County having current population of 65 (Dead PO), Sheffield, Mendota, Peru, Quincy, Hinsdale, and Ottawa. Comprehensive Military Mail Assemblage. Two large boxes of over 4,200 assorted envelopes, postcards, postal stationery, etc., pre-WWI period to late twentieth century. Includes Feldpost, censored mail, V-Mail, postcards, and Red Cross prisoner-of-war correspondence. The postcards reflect different design and printing styles and depict military bases, everyday life at these bases, battle damage, military humor, parades, occupation forces, patriotism, nationalism, wounded soldiers and civilians, and soldier portraits; there are also non-military-related landscapes, city scenes, famous buildings and people, etc. posted at military bases. Contains a large number of RPPCs. Of special interest are the many and varied cancels and auxiliary markings, frankings, labels, and personal messages. Our dealer friend bought Uncle Brett’s cover collection. He took out what he wanted for his stock and gave the rest to us. Fortunately, there is good value remaining. This lot, in three cartons, is mostly U.S. with maybe 15% foreign. The U.S. portion consists of stampless covers (much Ohio) and other postal history, flight covers, postal stationery and more.
