hand-painted stamp-size unadopted essay in India ink with Chinese white highlights for 5d stamp on thin card (31x36mm) showing QV portrait & Lyrebird endorsed 'FINIS CORONAT OPUS' beneath, being the nom-de-plume of
artist Maximilian Tannenberg who worked for the printers Troedel & Co in Melbourne; the Chinese white of 'E P' of 'FIVE PENCE' is somewhat abraded, otherwise in splendid condition. Another of Tannenberg's designs was
adopted for the 1894-1906 series as the issued stamp. Majestic essay
