4567 c image1956 (June 6) Morris Hedstrom Ltd airmail envelope (275x125mm) to Samoa with Sydney machine cancel and stamps washed off, obvious damage from immersion in water, very fine strike of the straight-line 'SOILED MAIL EX VASU' in violet handstamped at Apia on face. [The mail was flown to Fiji, then per wooden motorship 'Vasu' which foundered in rough seas about 300km north of Tonga, and was abandoned. Brian Peace states, at page 322, that '29 pieces of mail were recovered'.] (Image1)
