843 C imageJapan-Micronesia 1918 real photo PPC of the Japanese Post Office (a large two-storey building) on the island of Yap in the Caroline Islands (today part of the Federated States of Micronesia) in the Western Pacific. Franked Japan 1913 3s carmine x 2, canc fine Japanese script cds (= "Yap/Imperial Japanese Post" in English) 1.9.18. To New Zealand (message in English re possible penfriend correspondence). From 1899 until 1914, the remote Caroline Islands were a German colony (having been "purchased" from Spain). In Sept 1914, Japanese troops occupied the islands, which in 1919 (under the terms of the Treaty of Versailles) became part of the Japanese empire under League of Nations mandate. Subsequently (from 1945 to 1986), the USA administered the islands as a United Nations trust territory. Fine condition.
