960 CVR United States imageCollection of J. Errol Boyd Flight Covers, New York to Haiti and Return, June - July 1933, flown in a single engine Bellanca named “Miss Columbia’. Consists of 11 airmail covers: 6 were flown on the round trip flown by Boyd and co-pilot Robert G. Lyon, while 4 were on the New York-Haiti flight only and one was flown only on the return flight (and could have been on the first leg also). Of the round-trip group, 4 covers are signed by both Boyd and Lyon, one is unsigned but franked with the rare Haiti C4A overprinted stamp (c.v. for used $80) and one unsigned cover is franked with the Citadel stamp with the rare (fewer than a dozen known) unauthorized flight overprint (unlisted in Scott). Of the 4 New York-Haiti flight covers, one is signed by both pilots, and 3 are signed by Boyd (of which 2 have the rare Globe cachet). The Haiti-New York cover is unsigned. Covers have various backstamps. The collection also includes a press photograph of Boyd and photocopies of numerous articles published in Airpost Journal. A nice study collection to further expand upon.
J. Erroll Boyd (1891-1960), nicknamed the ‘Lindbergh of Canada” was the first Canadian pilot to cross the Atlantic. He did so in October 1930 with navigator Harry P. Connor on the same Bellanca plane. The New York-Haiti flight again in the same airplane was with co-pilot Robert G. Lyon (died in 1940) and a passenger. The Bellanca, built in 1925, had already crossed the Atlantic with Boyd but also with Charles Chamberlin in 1927.
