Postage stamps encased in a brassy-metal housing were patented on August 12, 1862, John Gault. His 'Design for Encasing Government Stamps' to alleviate a severe shortage of coins. His enterprise sold 750,000 pieces, only 3,500-7,000 are believed to have survived.

83 imageConfederate States: 1860's Four stampless envelopes all addressed to the Perkins family in New Britain Conn, Two SHIP ISLAND, MISS, weak and light strikes, with numeral "3"; also New ORLEANS JUN 19 1862 c.d.s. manuscript "Custom House" and no town, manuscript "In Haste", Due 3 handstamp. Three addressed to Edwin Perkins one to Master Herbert. Reference materials included, Regiment history and copies of articles.

The balloon SHIP ISLAND MISS postmark was used Apr 30 - June 11, 1862. Created by John Parker, a Federal Postmaster. A fascinating story.
