Victor Marsh), who supplied the Type III cachet, attempted to have a new cachet authenticated. He sent a batch of 1,000 covers, pre-stamped and already franked with this new "Horseshoe" cachet to the island. His intention was to have the covers included in the regular Tristan mail by Mrs Lily Glass. However, the administrator declined to approve this scheme and the covers were returned in bulk. Weston dropped some of these returned covers (as offered here) in an attempt to authenticate the use. The handstamp was sent to Mr Harding, the island's schoolteacher who used it privately on mails (a 1956 airletter is included showing his use of the cachet) (Image 1)
