Nov 20 1885" double circle date stamp, on cover addressed to Tompkinsville, New York, Very Fine, a beautiful cover from this rare Alaska town, reported to be the earliest known usagernA reduction plant was established at Killisnoo in 1880, first for whale-reducing, and later for the production of herring oil. Killisnoo first appeared on the 1890 U.S. Census as an unincorporated village of 79 residents. A fire in 1928 destroyed much of the community; the site was later used as a World War II Aleut relocation camp. Today, few traces remain of the community. (Image 1) (Image 2)
