first two pages of a six-page mortgage for $250,000 concerning the Pioneer Mill Sugar Plantation in Lahaina, Maui (founded in 1860 and one of Hawaii's largest sugar producers), document dated June 18, 1880 and fulfilled October 19, 1885 (at which
point a HI R3 was attached to the second-to-last page), seven strikes of red triangular "Stamp Duty Paid" handstamp dated June 21, 1877, bit of toning and minor page splitting to be expected on a document this age, still Very Fine and extremely rare,
almost certainly a significant percentage of the surviving examples of this stamp, a spectacular item befitting the most specialized and advanced collections of Hawaii (SRS $1,000 each, $25,000 total) (Image 1)
