2012   image1843 Soldiers Cover from Tasmania to Prince Edward Island, ratty cover datelined "Eagle Hawk Vict (?) May 28th 1843" and addressed to "Prince Edward Island in the Gulph of Saint Laurence" from a Robert Clutterham, portion of the letter reading "...in the yeare 1839 September 26th into the 96th Regt. We are now laying Van Diemens Land but are on a Detachment...", other sections of the letter refer to the island itself (cold), size of the mutton compared to England, prisoners, etc., poor to fair postal markings incl "SHIP LETTER" on back, soiled, worn and with tear along fold but still quite rare; the 96th Regiment was involved with convict transport between New South Wales and Tasmania in the 1840s
