North Borneo Covers and Cancellations 10c. letter rate (1 July 1895) 1899 (30 Dec.) envelope to Fiji, marked "Registered" (deleted), bearing 1897 Pictorial 5c. pair tied by fair Sandakan c.d.s. and showing, on
reverse, Labuan (3.1, 9.1 and 10.1; all showing year date as "19"), Singapore (15.1), Sydney (14.2) and Suva (4.3) datestamps. A scarce destination. Photo Estimate £ 120-150 Note: Fiji became a British Colony on 10 October 1874, and
joined the UPU on 1 October 1891 as a part of the "British Colonies of Australasia" which also included all the Australian States individually, and New Zealand. Apparently North Borneo had not been advised of this, and the cover was charged at the
foreign rate of 10c. There was no registration service to non-member countries, and the word "Registered" was deleted. (Image1)
