1009   image"(CROWN) / REGISTERED" hs: 1857 (18 Oct.) entire letter registered to U.S.A. "Via Aachen per Russian closed Mail" bearing Bavaria 1850 3kr. blue (plate 3) and 9kr. yellow-green (type 3) (4), two of the 9kr. are just touched in one corner otherwise the margins are generally good to large cancelled by 32 open cogwheel, with semi-circle "BANH. BAMBERG" despatch datestamp, handstruck "Chargé" in black, Aachen transit (25.10) and a superb strike of the crowned registered handstamp and a part strike of New York transit. There is a vertical folding crease and some light overall soiling. which does not detract from this magnificent and stunning cover. The postage rate should have been 45kr. (6kr. German/Austrian mail plus 39kr. onward franking). There are only three known covers (all from this correspondence) which were franked with the foreign franking only and not receiving any surcharge. it is not known whether the sender paid the addition in cash or had local free franking privilege. An interesting and rare 39kr. franking. A cover of major importance from this German State to America correspondence. Stegmuller Certificate (2011). 1013 Proof   imageThe Old Original (Accepted Die) Perkins Bacons Archive Example, The First Die for the Penny Stamp (later rejected) was engraved by the Royal Master Engraver Charles Heath on instructions from Perkins Bacon and Petch in January 1840. The Die was abandoned as the background was considered to be too light the Queens head was also too lightly engraved and it was found that the die did not transfer sufficiently well. Charles Heath stared the Second Die (Accepted Die) in Mid-January this was accepted by Queen Victoria on 2nd of March. As was customary Perkins Bacon and Co produce one example for their records which was duly hand stamped on the reverse. In 1935 Perkins Bacon and Co went out of business and its records (including this proof) were acquired by Charles and Harry Nissen and Thomas Allen. The records were subsequently transferred to the Royal Philatelic Society London where Percy de Worms organised them for publication. Thought to be only one other proof from the Perkins Bacon and Co Archive in Private Hands (The rejected Die). The Proof is on India Paper mounted on card. 1840 Mulreadys & Caricatures
Lot Symbol Catalog No. Descrip Opening
1019   image1879 1st December. 2d. Mulready Envelope Stereo a195 (with a letter enclosed) posted in London WC5. The Mulready which prepaid postage up to 4oz was incorrectly surcharged 2d post due. The recipient Mr James Stevens of 112 High Street Clapham wrote to the Post Office pointing out that the post due fine should not have been applied. The Post Office Officially responded agreeing the post due was in their words Erroneously charged and stated that instructions have been given to refund the twopence owed to him. A unique item that set a precedent on late used Mulreadys (and other stationery?) A very important addition to a Mulready or Post Due collection. The letter has been re-backed.(Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3) (Image 4)
