40757   image1805-1807. Two covers: Feb. 1805 folded registered cover from Lima to Santiago (Chile), transported by the “La Primera” frigate as endorsed at lower left, displaying bold strikes of “Certifcacion/A.Lima” two-line and “Franca” straight-line hs in red, charged at double rate in manuscript on reverse for a total of 7 1/2 Reales including 5 Reales of the maritime fee and 2 1/2 Reales. Annotated as received including date and signature inside, as stipulated for registered mail by postal rules. Registered maritime mail is exceedingly scarce, and of great postal-history interest as an extraordinary service rarely used in this period, with just fewer than five maritime examples known. Although not being maritime mail, a similar registered cover, bearing the same postmarks and dated 1807, August 29, is also included in this lot to demonstrate the difference between the maritime and overland rates, the former being of lower cost than the postage applied on mail conveyed overland to Chile; in this case, as handwritten on reverse, being 161/2 reales, including 10 reales registration fee. Ex Kuori and Sitjà.(Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3) (Image 4)

40758   image1808 (Feb 28). Cover from an unknown origin to Madrid, displaying a fine strike of “Peru” straight-line hs, forwarded via Cartagena-Havana-Cádiz. Two manuscript rates including “30r.v.” (Reales de vellón) and “55”, being most likely the latter which paid the required postage for a weight of one ounce and 14 adarmes. A very desirable dated transatlantic mail.(Image 1) (Image 2)

40759   image1810 ca. Cover front from an unidentifiable locality in Peru to Madrid, endorsed “Pr. la Fagta. Suplicada” (“Suplicada” frigate), graced by a magnificent bold strike of “Perú” straight-line postmark applied on receipt. This is the only item known displaying the “Perú” of Cádiz used during the colonial period; of great significance and desirability as a “Peru” hs used in Spain. Before the discovery of this item, this postmark was believed to have been used in mid 1800’s, and not during the colonial dominion.(Image 1) (Image 2)

40761   image1860 (April 17). Large envelope from Valencia, being remarkably addressed to the Captain General (highest rank in the hierarchy) of Puerto Rico stationed at San Juan, endorsed “S.M” standing for “Servicio Militar”, denoting military correspondence, with fancy cachet of a military court in the General Headquarters of Valencia and Murcia, with signatures at base and manuscript text confirming the official nature of the contents, displaying Valencia dispatch c.d.s., “A” marking for “Abono” indicating pre-payment and, delightfully struck, “España” straight-line (type 16) in blue, backstamped in transit at Madrid. Some slight aging as usually found and few worm holes at left. The only reported example of this very rare marking in blue; additionally, this is the penultimate usage documented in America of a “España” postmark. Cert. CEM. Cover from Valladolid (Spain) to the President of the High Court of Puerto Rico at San Juan, endorsed “S.N.” standing for “Servicio Nacional” as required for official correspondence, with oval cachet of the Court of Valladolid, exhibiting two strikes of dispatch c.d.s., perfectly struck with “España” straight-line in black. Few worm holes mainly at upper right. One of just two documented examples of this handstamp in black, with the main feature, conferring its rarity, being the fact of representing the latest usage recorded of a “España” postmark in America.
