40558   image1778 ca. Large folded cover from Madrid addressed to Antonio Hermenegildo de Querejazu, member of the Royal Audience of Lima, most infrequently rated at 67 Reales (in manuscript), according to a 6? ounces weight, endorsed “Coruña”, where the “España” straight-line in red was applied. The route of transport was Corunna-Havana-Cartagena de Indias-Santa Fe-Quito-Lima. The highest franking documented on mail to the Americas exhibiting any of the “España” postmarks. Ex Camino and Sitjà.(Image 1) (Image 2)

40559   image1779 ca. Folded cover from Cádiz (Spain) to Lima, via Corunna and Buenos Aires, rated on departure with boxed “3 Pta.” marking, then transported overland to Corunna where it was struck by “España” straight-line postmark in a different shade in red, following embarkation on the “El Clarendón” frigate as validated by the endorsement at left, departing from the north of Spain to call at Buenos Aires in America, following an overland route via Potosí. An exceptional and very unusual combination of postmarks applied at Corunna and Cádiz, these cities being located far apart on the northern and southern coasts of Spain. Ex Camino and Sitjà.(Image 1) (Image 2)

40560   image1790 ca. Undated folded cover from Cádiz via Corunna to Lima, initially struck on dispatch with red “España” hs at bottom, with a similar strike of Corunna applied at top (Kouri types I & II), presumably having paid 5 Reales, of which 2 corresponding to inland fees, and conveyed via Buenos Aires. This mail, instead of being embarked at Cádiz, was placed on board a ship calling at Corunna which had most probably planned an earlier departure. The only cover documented displaying two different “España” postmarks, this being an absolutely exceptional feature, as these were applied in two different cities in Spain. Ex Camino and Sitjà.(Image 1) (Image 2)

40561   image1790 ca. Two covers from Spain to Lima, both transported via Corunna and disembarked at Buenos Aires, where the “España” postmark in red was handstruck (Kouri type VII), then following the route via Cuzco. One affected by edge splitting at base and vertical filing fold, the other with small portion of paper missing caused by insect erosion. A rare usage of the Buenos Aires postmark. Pedro alias La Reyna”, and docket inside stating the arrival of the “San Pedro” to Callao on 15 April 1790. Small erosion caused by vertical fold at top. 40564   image1795 (Oct). Folded cover from Spain to Guatemala endorsed “Coruña”, where the red “España” postmark was struck, rated for the triple weight with “7” Reales in manuscript according to the 1764 tariff. Dated on arrival on reverse in manuscript. It is believed that the route covered was either Corunna-Havana-Acapulco or Omoa-Guatemala. Triple rate transatlantic covers from Spain are very scarce, with no more than five recorded.(Image 1) (Image 2)
