POLAND » POLAND POST LEVANTE
Lot Symbol Catalog No. Descrip Opening
52479   imageRemarkable Showpiece of Polish Stamps Used from Constantinople 1919 Two 50f, one 1.50M and two 2.50M values all tied with three strikes of the Polish Post Constantinople single-ring cds dated 19 II 1920 (in error for “1921”), sent registered to Warsaw and showing circled “Wr.1” censor hs on front and 4 III 21 arrival on reverse. As the cover could only have been sent in 1921, the wrong date in the Polish Constantinople cds can be explained by the trouble in supplying a new date slug from Warsaw, owing to the depredations and chaos from the recent Russo-Polish War. Realised CHF 18’000+ in 1993 One of only two registered covers known with similar franking used to Warsaw. An important showpiece for Foreign Offices in the Levant and in excellent condition given its size.

SOLD for € 1,500.00
Closing..Dec-06, 12:00 PM

52484   imageAmazing Non-philatelic Use of Rare “P.P.C.” Overprints 1920 5f, 25f & 50f values with well-struck overprints tied by single-circle Polish Post c.d.s. dated 2 XII 1920 to gorgeous hand-painted picture postcard sent REGISTERED to Warsaw, backstamped with (16 XII 20) and circled “Wr 1” censor handstamp as well as bold registration box handstamp. Realised CHF 17’600 in David Feldman Auction in 1993. Perhaps the most outstanding, and certainly the most beautiful, item of the Polish Post Office in Constantinople, and a fantastic showpiece for the Levant Foreign Offices collector Note: the translated message reads, “Sending you a Constantinople beauty. Kissing you strongly. Towards seeing each other quickly. Your sister Janka”, dated “29/XI 1920” and addressed to “Wlodzimierz Rachmanoff” (later a celebrated philatelist and author)
