40892   imageDescription1802-1900, EARLY CENTRAL AMERICA POSTAL HISTORY exhibit collection of about 180 items on 156 pages showing the pre-adhesive postal markings of the “Kingdom of Guatemala” (pre-independence) and its successor states, including Mexico (Chiapas), Honduras, El Salvador, Costa Rica and Nicaragua (all of which, except for Mexico had formed the Central American Confederation, 1821-39) and subsequently went their separate ways. The exhibit starts with an early printed decree, map and other preliminary pages (6), then continues by States (incl. pre-independence items) starting with Chiapas (13 items on 9 pages, many diff. cancels on fronts or covers) followed by Guatemala proper (45 pages, some with more than one cover or front, incl. incoming, royal mail hs, etc.), Honduras (9 pages), El Salvador (40 pages, some with 2 covers or fronts), Nicaragua (14 pages) and Costa Rica (6 pages) with a further section of Official Correspondence (Guatemala) on 27 pages. Please be reminded that fronts, rather than full covers, are the norm for this material (as it was archived thus) and this collection has a surprisingly generous number of full covers as well. The markings are legible to superb, and additional cachets, rate marks, etc. which enhance the value of such material are sometimes present as well. Some incoming covers are included for the period, which is rich in pre-independence items incl. some with the famous patriotic “VIVA F. VII” as part of the handstamps. Included with the lot are four volumes of the “Diccionario Geographico de Guatemala” (1961-62 2-vol. original edition plus 1968 2-vol. Supplement, all paper bound) (Est. CHF 3’000/4’000)
