201   imageMADAGASCAR - RED "9d" PORT LOUIS MARK ON 1s-4d RATE COVER TO GB VIA MAURITIUS PREPAID EXTRA 6d TO MAURITIUS; [Aug.?] 1869 env. (minor wrinkling & torn flap) addressed to "Messrs S.W. Silver & Co." in London, franked for the 1s-4d rate, which was made up of 6d from Madagascar to Mauritius + the regular 10d rate to GB.; there is a contemporary note inside; "Rainilaiebivony, The Prime Minister of Madagascar. Its Capital is Antananarvo" (was he the sender?). [S.W. Silver was a significant figure within the British and Foreign Bible Society, and is known to have had London Missionary Society connections, as well as an interest in Madagascar.] The London Missionary Society maintained an account with the Mauritius P.O. so that their outgoing Madagascar letters could be stamped en route at Port Louis. This cover has a 4d Rose + 1/- Orange with fair "B53" numerals (one just tied by London "PAID" arrival cds) as well as a very fine 1st-type red Port Louis handstruck "9d" Accountancy Mark (5d for GB + 4d for France). It also has a v. fine blue "MAURITIUS/A" backstamp of 30 Oct., but the letter was probably written in about August (in Madagascar). Very rare Accountancy Marking cover from Madagascar. Ship Beau Monde" franked by India 1a (fault) + 2a tied by v. fine Calcutta "B/1" octagons, with a fine blue Port Louis "6d/TO PAY" Postage Due mark nicely placed on the front but most unusually also alongside a very fine red Port Louis "Late Received" mark. The Late mark - of which Dave Tarry had only recorded one other example in red ink - is explained by a red P.O. endorsement on the flap; "Received from the Captain of the Beau Monde"; he handed in his letters after the last Port Louis delivery time of the day. There is a red boxed "CALCUTTA/SHIP LETTER/PAID" ds and blue Port Louis "MAURITIUS" cds 26 July) on the reverse. Possibly a unique combination of Port Louis markings? 219   imageRARE BLUE PORT LOUIS "7d/TO PAY" MARK ON INGOING UNDERPAID COVER EX IRELAND; Spectacular 6 June 1866 env. (slight flap faults) from "PARSONSTOWN" (v. fine cds on reverse) to Mauritius "By French Mail Packet from Marseilles" (for which the rate was 10d) but only franked for the 8d rate - with 6d Lilac (pl.5) and 2 1d Reds (all tied by v. fine Parsonstown "371" Irish numerals) and so charged postage due. There is a very fine London "DEFICIENT-POSTAGE [12]/HALF-FINE [3=45]" on the front along with the red London "1d" Accountancy Mark (only 1d credit from GB to Mauritius) and so also having the rare blue Port Louis "7d/TO PAY" on the front. This 7d hs is thought to be one of the three rarest of the Port Louis TO PAY marks. [Ruffle/Pitray only recorded three hs 7d's compared to 156 6d's.] Exceptional and attractive ingoing GB cover; we can only recall having seen one similar underpaid GB cover with this 7d mark, from this same correspondence.
