1980   imagePOSTMARK MIX ON COVER TO NEFARIOUS BONAW POSTMASTER - MISSENT, TOO LATE, H.S. "2", NUMERAL, ETC.; Extraordinary 10 Aug. 1846 EL sent locally with m/s "2" charge on the front to "Mr. Cameron, Post Master, Bonaw" (ref. a lost parcel) which the addressee has clearly then used as a handstamp trial sheet; it has black h.s. "2" UPP marks, an unclear "48" Numeral, red boxed "BONAW" d.s. (13 Aug.), and the only recorded (?) examples of both a red boxed "MISSENT/TO/BONAW" (partly albino) and mainly fine fancy black "Too Late". Recent research has shown that this John Cameron was convicted in 1847 of forgery (of PO Money Orders amongst other offences) and was transported to Australia, where he became a successful journalist amongst other things, before moving to New Zealand and then dying in Queensland. Fascinating item.Cross Reference: LATE FEE/TOO LATE MAIL, UNIFORM 1d POSTAGE PERIOD, POSTAGE DUE MARKS, MISSENT MAIL (Image)
