The Murrays thus avoided 2s-6d Packet postage. Free Franks to the West Indies are rare. [Ex Drs. Maberly" authorising mark at lower left, as well as the usual red London crown-on-top London "FREE" d.s. on the front. Maberly was the Secretary of th P.O. from 1836 to 1840 and was one of Rowland Hill's bitterest opponents! Rare; very few examples of this Maberly mark have been recorded. [We have recorded only four other covers and one front with this Maberly mark.] Rare usage of a Prestamp handstruck signature on Free mail. Maberly" address-side imprint to someone care of the "Poste Restante" in Nice charged "12[decimes]" on delivery although having no British rate and a red crowned London "FREE" d.s.; the contents state that a transit letter to the addressee in Nice with 2s-6½d postage owing is held in London. Much rarer than the equivalent Freeling pre-1840 version, because Maberly only held the office of P.O. Secretary from 1836 to 1839, whereas Freeling was in office from 1798 to 1836.
