1d RED WITH SALTCOATS DOUBLE-LINED MX ON CROSS-BORDER CANADA/U.S. TRANSATLANTIC COVER; Remarkable 26 Aug. 1843 EL from
"DUNDAS/U[pper].C[anada]." (fine cds on front) to Glasgow "via Boston" with multi-rates of Canada/US (with "PAID"x2) and Lpool oval "AMERICA/L" on flap, but redirected to "Saltcoats" and then redirected again - on the reverse - to Kinross with-
4-margin 1d Red (AG; pl.27?) on the flap tied by a fine clearly two-lined Saltcoats Maltese Cross (recorded by Rockoff/Jackson for late 1841 only). Spectacular Exhibition Item for Scottish, Transatlantic or Line Engraved collectors. Cross

RARE 'SPLIT 1d RED' COVER WITH TWO VERTICAL HALVES OF 1d REDS SPOTTED & ENDORSED "Stamp unperfect 2" IN BLUE; 16 Apr. 1845 env. (pin
holes at top left well clear of stamp) from Rotherham (blue cds on flap) to Sheffield franked by what appears to be a regular 1d Red (OJ) but is in fact two slightly overlapped vertical halves of different stamps (presumably both previously used!).
This was spotted in transit (in Rotherham P.O.) and the stamp was heavily cancelled (to make each half unusable of course) and tied by the Rotherham "655" Numeral; as a result it was endorsed on the front in blue ink (at Rotherham) "Stamp unperfect
[sic]" and charged "2[d]" as an unpaid letter. A very rare example of the cause of the change of 1d Red design which led to the corner letters in all 4 corners to prevent this kind of fraud. Only a handful of such 'Failed Postal Fraud' 1841 1d Red
covers have been recorded. Exhibition Item of great character.Cross Reference: YORKSHIRE, POSTAGE DUE MARKS (Image)
