DERBY Vt. - PAIR OF POSTMASTER's OWN "FREE" LETTERS - RED OVAL OR SCARCE BLACK 3-RING D.S.; 1834 EL to Hanover NH (contents from Postmaster) endorsed "Free M. Leslie P.M." on the front with v. fine red oval "DERBY-LINE/VT" mark; plus 18 May 1838 EL from the new Postmaster ("E.S. Johnson") to a fellow-Postmaster in Hartford Ct. with good contents ref. the Cross-Border mails system; "...we have 4 mails per week to and from Montreal, twice by St. Johns in little more than a day, and twice via Granby & Sherbrooke..." with great detail, also endorsed "Free" but with a very fine scarce black 3-ring "DERBY LINE Vt." partly m/s-dated mark on the front. RARE FANCY INTAGLIO "DERBY-LINE/V.T." 'BEEHIVE' MARKS ON X-BORDER COVERS EX CANADA; Jan./Feb. 1837 pair of ELs (filing creases) to New York from near Quebec and each with Cross-Border rates but both also with very fine (crease) or partly fine (no crease) in black or reddish-brown and each with manuscript date in centre. Rare usages of this unique distinctive mark of the Vermont Border exchange P.O. MAIDEN VOYAGE OF 1st COLLINS LINE CONTRACT MAIL STEAMER - RARE NY "21" A/C MARK + RARE OVAL "AMERICA" D.S.; 16 Apr. 1850 EL letter from "AUGUSTA/Ga." (faint red c.d.s. on front) to Ireland "P. Steam Packet from N. York to L'pool"; this letter was carried on the Maiden Voyage of the first Collins Line mail steamer S.S. 'Atlantic'. It has the brown Augusta h.s. "24" (unpaid) charge-mark on the front along with the very rare New York Exchange Office large h.s. "21" (only 5 recorded; 21c due from G.B. to the U.S. - for internal U.S. postage plus the transatlantic rate by American ship) and the Liverpool h.s. "1/-" (to pay on delivery) mark on the front. On the flap is the short-lived and rare oval Liverpool "AMERICA" d.s. (10 May) and Belfast arrival marks. Only a handful of covers from this important first Collins Line voyage is recorded. EARLY 'GRILL' STAMPS: Group of four inc. 1861-66 2c black mint (heavy hinge) with "E" grill (Sc.87 $1,700), 3c rose used with "E" grill and 15c black used with "F" grill (Sc.98 $275). Also an unused (no gum) example of 1873 6c dull pink with "J" grill (Sc.159b $1,800 for gummed - this stamp has misaligned perfs at lower edge). The 6c stamp is accompanied by two US Certs.
