412 image1882, 6 d. mauve, perf 12 x 10, horizontal pair, used, variety "Imperforate" between pair, cancelled by black postmark, right hand stamp has vertical crease, ragged perfs. in places, otherwise fine, a rare error of printing. Cert. BPA (2013). Gi = £3'750.rnRemark: The discovery of this error was first recorded in the 'Australian Stamp Journal' in July 1911 when a bank correspondence was sold to the Sydney stamp dealer Fred Hagen, yielding a used vertical block containing nine imperforate pairs. This is believed to have been split and there is now a block of six in the H. L. White collection in the State Library of New South Wales, leaving six pairs available to collectors, of which one is damaged and one unaccounted for.rnrnProvenance: Ex. G. J. 30001 image1819 (April 3): Entire letter from one Frederick Drennan in Sydney via England to Capt. de Reynaud of the 60th Regiment at the Cape of Good Hope, endorsed 'fav.d by J. Pincham Esq.' and 'Messrs. Greenwood & Co.', struck in transit with fine step type "HASTINGS / SHIP LETTER" in brown (Robertson S3) with London cds (Oct 19) in red on reverse and rated '1/4d.' due to pay upon arrival (8d. Ship Letter + 8d. for under 80 miles). The letter presumably forwarded on to the Cape as an enclosure by Greenwood & Co. A fine and rare entire.rnrnProvenance: Collection Brian Peace, Prestige, Melbourne, 27 July 2009, lot 1005.rnrnNote: The writer, Frederick Drennan, entered the Army as Assistanmt Commisary in April 1809, he served in Canada during the American War, later served in Jamaica and then was sent to New South Wales arriving on the 'Globe' in January 1819. He almost immediately fell foul of both Governor Lachlan Macquarie and Lieutenant-Colonel James Erskine, the latter having him arrested and later released. He was sent back to England under arrest in 1822 after the NSW Treasury enquiries found a deficiency of over £ 6'500, which amount he failed to repay. Rated at '1/-' in manuscript, the entire was carried by the 'Andromache' on June 30, thence via Rio de Janeiro (Sept 21). 30006 image1840 (Aug 24): Entire letter from Bungonia to Edinburgh, Scotland with manuscript "Ship Letter" at lower left, prepaid internally at 11d., struck with octagonal framed "BUNGONIA / POST PAID" in red with oval "PAID SHIP LETTER / ♚ / SE 3 / 1840 / SYDNEY" in red at right. Reverse oval "♚ / GENERAL POST OFFICE / SYDNEY" in black (Sept 3) and London SHIP LETTER straight line in black and cds in red (March 13, 1841). Charged '8d.' for the Ship Letter fee upon arrival. This settler was happier than most, he had become the proprietor of the "Ship Inn" in Bungonia. 30012 image1849 (Dec 2): Prepaid entire letter from Tarcutta to Yass struck with very fine octagonal framed "PAID AT / TARCUTTA" handstamp in red and rated '8d.' in manuscript adjacent, reverse with oval "TARCUTTA / ♚ / DE 3 / 1849 / NEW S. WALES" struck in black. Manuscript "Rec'd 5 Dec 1849 - Yass" at left. The fully transcribed contents refer to the expense a Mr. Napier is proposing for the cost of making Postmarks for the Tarcutta office and "if Mr. Napier would give a certain sum for performing a certain portion of the Post Office work that is most convenient to him such as the receiving and despatching of Mails, delivery of letters, it would perhaps be well to enter into some arrangement with him ..".
