Diena (1983) Sassone = € 5'000.rnNote: On November 1st, 1859, the Lira Italiana was introduced in the Romagna as new currency with one old bajocco being equal to five new centesimi. 3093 image1859: Registered entire letter to Galatz carrying valuables (endorsed as travelling with 355 gold coins at left with return receipt requested) struck with "JASSY / MOLDOVA" circular datestamp (June 9) and rare usage of framed Cyrillic "FRANCO" and "RECEPISSE" registration handstamp all in blue (Kiriac figs. 292+216). Charged "33 Lei" in manuscript at upper right (old Lei = 1'320 parale). Two insignificant file folds, a wonderful and extremely rare entire. Ex collection Sassower.rnrnNote: The Cyrillc framed "FRANCO" handstamp was reintroduced for just this purpose, this being the earliest recorded use of the second phase of the handstamp after re-introduction of adhesive stamps. This cover illustrated in Kiriac Dragomir "Stampilografie Postala" on page 74 and further discussed and illustrated in "The London Philatelist" of March-April 1980 (Volume 89, no. 1047-1048) in an article by Gabby Sassower on pages 51. The cover marked at 103 (old) Lei and 20 parale = 4'140 parale. 3108 imageAustrian occupation of the Danubian Principalities during the Crimean War, 1855 (July 26): Entire letter from Bucharest to Forwarding Agent in Galati from there to Constantinople, struck by "BUKAREST 26 / 7" cds of the consular P.O. (Tchilinghirian fig. 713) and oval FRANCO, full prepayment indicated by additional franco pen cross. Front struck by oval "SCHLIENGER BROs & Co / GALATZ" forwarder cachet in blue, not listed in Kenneth Rowe, internal manuscript docketing gives August 2 as day of receipt. An interesting forwarded item, a procedure which was in principal no more necessary as the postal connections, overland during the winter and with DDSG and Lloyd during the summer, were swiftly restored after the occupation of the Danubian Principalities.
