10098 image1839 (July 31): Official entire letter endorsed O.H.M.S. mailed within Sydney and redirected to Bathurst, struck with octagonal framed "5 / O'CLOCK" handstamp in red denoting following day delivery and handstruck '"2" (pence) for local rate in black.On redirection the "2" deleted in manuscript and re-rated at '9d.' due in manuscript for the 80 to 120 miles rate. Two vertical file folds do not detract from a rare and most attractive entire.rnProvenance: Collection A. Leslie Leon, RL, London, 14 March 1978, lot 8; Collection Brian Peace, Prestige, 27 July 2009, lot 1064.rnNote: The time handstamps were introduced in 1838. They provided for threee local deliveries in Sydney: 9 am., 1 pm. and 5 pm. This last was disciontinued in the mid 1840's as many businesses closed prior to this time. 10099 image1846 (Aug 11): Official entire letter emdorsed O.H.M.S. from Singleton to James Raymond, Postmaster General in Sydney struck witth framed "FREE" handstamp in red. Reverse with "SINGLETON / ♚ / AU 11 / 1846" oval despatch datestamp across flap. The letter's contents talking of a robbery: "...The Mail between here and Maitland was stopped about one mile on this side of Black Creek on its way to Maitland yesterday the 10th inst. by two Armed Men and the Mail bags taken. There was three letters containing cash, one of my own containing the enclosed orders and cheques about the same sum of Mr. Thos. Cullen's and about £17 of a Mr. Craddock's. I have despatched two parties to endeavour to recover the Bags and any letters they may find. Mr. Munro the Contractor has also gone to endeavour to recover the Bags etc. I will let you know the result when they return by next Post".
