76 image1802 (May 12/30): Entire letter from Santo Domingo marked 'a coppy' and addressed to Israel Thorndyke Esq. in Beverley (Massachusetts) sent via "New York JUN.19" oval handstamp in red, taxed '30' in red ink. Fine and rare letter with interesting content about higher duties on Mahogany.rnNote: Israel Thorndike (1755-1832) was born in Beverly and was a strong supporter of American independence. He served as Captain of the armed ship 'Resource' during the revolution. After the war, Israel entered a business partnership with his brother-in-law, Moses Brown. Brown & Thorndike conducted lucrative commercial trade in the East and the Caribbean. Israel Thorndike continued on to hold public office and engage in significant philanthropy. Most notably, in 1818, he purchased a large American history collection from a Professor Ebeling of Hamburg as a gift for the Harvard library.The collection was purchased for $6,500. Israel Thorndike moved to Boston in 1810 and died there in 1832, leaving a significant fortune. (Image 1) (Image 2)
