6222 image1899 (Jan 12): De La Rue composite Essay for the 1 r. 50 c. value on thick card (90 x 115 mm.), dated at upper right and marked "A" at upper left with the head plate printed in dull blue and the surround entireely hand-painted with value "One Rupee Fifty Cents" in carmine and "Ceylon Postage" and the corner spandrels all in shades of pale and dark blue picked out in Chinese white. A similar example (but printed) is illustrated in the De La Rue Collection edited by Frank Walton RDP on page 2530. Some soiling but a gorgeous and stunning Essay. (Image 1) (Image 2)
