Manuscript '7' pence credit to France. Carried on the French Packet "Djemnah" to Aden and thence by the "Godavery" via Mahe, Seychelles to Mauritius where backstamped in blue (March 12) and thence by private vessel to destination. 5381 image1841: 1 d. pink envelope used in 1860 back to England, the embossed 'stamp' area almost entirely covered by New South Wales perf. Diadem 6 d. grey (Gi 143) tied by "21" sunburst obliterator in black and carried by the "Salsette". Backstamped with "Campbelltown" cds (Aug 20), Sydney cds of the following day and Exeter arrival cds (Oct 22). Struck on arrival with "2" pence handstamp in black due for local delivery with "Port Victoria / New Zealand" cds (July 23) in black of arrival. Re-addressed upon arrival (Oct 9) to Brecon. Sold together with off cover 1 d. lilac and 1883 2½ d. lilac similarly cancelled. Some aging around perforations on the but a remarkable usage - the sole 1 d. pink usage from this Campaign recorded. Official 1 d. scarlet in a vertcal strip of three tied by Hertford handstamps in black. A rare usage the 4 d. franking would pay for a letter / parcel of up to 2 lbs.
