FINE. A RARE AND DESIRABLE EXAMPLE OF THE 2-CENT 1922 IMPERFORATE HORIZONTALLY. VERY FEW ARE KNOWN. A GREAT RARITY OF THE ISSUE
Gary Griffith states that 3 to 5 pairs are known. The most desirable (and most easily authenticated) originate from a block of twelve with plate no. 14213 which contains three examples of the variety as well as a fourth pair with part perfs. The multiple had Bureau brown paper fixing tears at left (including one in an error pair). The pair offered here is the rightmost pair in the multiple, which was offered in our 1966 Rarities sale.

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. THIS IS THE ONLY RECORDED EXAMPLE OF THE 4-CENT MARTHA WASHINGTON IMPERFORATE HORIZONTALLY. A GREAT RARITY OF THE ISSUE AND A MAGNIFICENT EXHIBITION ITEM
According to Gary Griffith in his book United States Stamps 1922-26, the brown paper on the back was a common Bureau repair, where sheets of 400 or half-sheets of 200 that were mangled in the perforating process were taped back together in order to salvage usable panes. Often, if one pane of 100 was damaged, the remaining panes could be salvaged and put into circulation. Sometimes the damaged and taped panes found their way into circulation, probably from being erroneously placed among the undamaged panes.

EXTREMELY FINE. AN EXCEEDINGLY RARE MULTIPLE OF THE 5-CENT 1922 ISSUE -- THIS IS THE FIRST WE HAVE OFFERED SINCE 2000.
One or two panes of 100 are believed to exist. According to Gary Griffith, one was found in Stamford Conn. and was broken by Philip Ward. who numbered each stamp before dividing the pane. This block does not have the numbers, indicating that it probably came from the other pane.

EXTREMELY FINE. A RARE BLOCK OF THE 10-CENT 1922 IMPERFORATE. A WONDERFUL EXHIBITION ITEM
According to United States Stamps 1922-26 by Gary Griffith, noted dealer Philip Ward purchased a pane in 1925 in Oklahoma. Part of the pane was marked for destruction by blue crayon, but apparently made it into circulation. A second pane is also known, which was similarly marked for destruction. Examples without the blue crayon are rarer and more desirable.

VERY FINE AND SCARCE. A DESIRABLE BOTTOM SHEET MARGIN PAIR OF THIS RARITY.
According to United States Stamps 1922-26 by Gary Griffith, noted dealer Philip Ward purchased a pane in 1925 in Oklahoma. Large areas were marked for destruction with a blue crayon -- examples such as the pair offered here, not defaced by the blue crayon, are scarce.

FINE. A RARE SOUND EXAMPLE OF THE 10-CENT 1922 PERF 10 AT TOP OR BOTTOM VARIETY. ONLY ELEVEN SINGLES AND TWO PAIRS ARE KNOWN TO US.
Of the examples contained in our records, only five singles and one pair are sound.

VERY FINE AND CHOICE. AN EXTREMELY RARE PAIR OF THE 12-CENT 1922 ISSUE IMPERFORATE VERTICALLY.
According to Gary Griffith, this was first listed in the Scott Catalogue in 1936, based on a find reported by Spencer Anderson. Apparently, one pane was discovered in which the top three rows showed no vertical perforations. Assuming no others were found, this would make only 15 pairs of the variety.

VERY FINE AND CHOICE. A RARE MINT NEVER-HINGED EXAMPLE OF THE 20-CENT 1922 ISSUE IMPERFORATE VERTICALLY.
According to Gary Griffith, a complete pane of 100 was found in Pasadena Cal. in 1929, which was divided between two collectors. This would make 50 pairs total. At least one of the panes was broken into pairs and blocks. The example offered here is especially desirable as it is Mint N.H..
