15c Black, F. Grill (98). Mint N.H., bright shade and crisp impression, clearly-defined grill, unusually choice centering EXTREMELY FINE. AN UNBELIEVABLY RARE MINT NEVER-HINGED EXAMPLE OF THE 1868
15-CENT F GRILL. THIS IS THE FIRST WE HAVE EVER ENCOUNTERED, EITHER AS A SINGLE OR AS PART OF A MULTIPLE. A FANTASTIC RARITY. Most blocks of the grilled issues with sound and centered stamps have been broken to feed collector demand for singles.
A rare example is the well-centered block we offered in our Sale 843, but every stamp was lightly hinged. The P.S.E. Population Report does not list any Mint N.H. examples (the two best are OG 85 and 90). With 1986, 1995 and 2007 P.F.
certificates. Scott Retail as hinged (Image) |

24c Gray Lilac, F. Grill (99). Original gum, lightly hinged, deep rich color and proof-like impression on brilliant white paper, sharp and clearly-defined grill, choice centering EXTREMELY FINE
BY ANY STANDARDS AND A SUPERB GEM FOR THIS RARE ORIGINAL-GUM EXAMPLE OF THE 1868 24-CENT F GRILL. The higher-denomination F Grills were produced in limited quantities and seem to have caused National Bank Note Co. difficulty in applying
perforations. They are typically off center with very choppy perfs This stamp has uncharacteristically precise centering and well-formed perforations. With 2001 and 2007 P.F. certificates (Image) |
