299 c imageJonesboro Tenn., 5c Black entire (45XU1). Clearly-struck provisional handstamp, cancelled by two strikes of blue "Jonesboro Tenn." dateless circle on cover to Blountsville Tenn., missing top flap, some minor edge faults and overall soiling

VERY FINE. THE JONESBORO PROVISIONAL IN BLACK, SCOTT 45XU1, IS SIGNIFICANTLY RARER THAN ITS BLUE COUNTERPART. ONLY FIVE EXAMPLES ARE RECORDED IN CROWN CENSUS, AND THIS IS THE FIRST WE HAVE OFFERED SINCE 1992.

The Crown survey counts fifteen examples of the Jonesboro provisional entire, including five struck in Black (45XU1) and ten in Dark Blue (45XU2). Some of these do not have any town datestamp.

Ex Caspary. The Scott value for 45XU1 is not commensurate with the rarity of this provisional in Black, probably because none have been offered in many years (the more common Dark Blue is valued at $7,000.00). (Image)

The Crown survey counts fifteen examples of the Jonesboro provisional entire, including five struck in Black (45XU1) and ten in Dark Blue (45XU2). Some of these, such as the example offered here, do not have any town datestamp.

FINE-VERY FINE APPEARANCE. A RARE UNUSED PAIR OF THE 5-CENT KNOXVILLE PROVISIONAL. VERY FEW MULTIPLES ARE KNOWN.

VERY FINE. A RARE EXAMPLE OF THE 5-CENT KNOXVILLE PROVISIONAL TIED ON COVER BY A HANDSTAMPED MARKING.

Our records indicate that approximately 22 covers are known with the 5c Brick Red Knoxville Provisional. Of these, over half are pen cancelled. Perhaps ten covers exist with the stamp tied by a handstamped marking. (Image)

303 c imageKnoxville Tenn., 5c Brick Red on Grayish Laid (47X1). Ample margins at top and bottom, framelines at sides just shaved, two tiny nicks at left, rich color, tied by "Knoxville Ten. Mar. 11, 186[2]" circular datestamp on small cover to Brig. Gen. Daniel Ruggles at Corinth Miss., reduced at top

VERY FINE. THE ONLY RECORDED EXAMPLE OF THE KNOXVILLE PROVISIONAL TIED BY THE LARGE SANS-SERIF CIRCULAR DATESTAMP, WHICH WAS FIRST USED IN 1862. THIS IS THE LATEST KNOWN USAGE OF THE KNOXVILLE PROVISIONAL STAMP.

The large circle with sans-serif type was not used in 1861, based on our survey of Knoxville covers (including stampless, provisionals and general issues). The date is difficult to read, but appears to be "MAR" and is certainly 1862. Our records and the Levi records contain no more than ten 47X1/47X2 covers with the stamp tied by a handstamped marking. This cover is the only one with the large sans-serif datestamp, and it is the latest recorded use of the Knoxville provisional (a Jan. 1862 cover precedes it).
