"3" due for ferriage rate, receiving backstamp, stamp and cover with trivial age spots, horizontal file fold well away from stamp

FINE. AN EXTREMELY RARE 1847 ISSUE COVER TO CANADA WITH THE 3-PENCE FERRIAGE RATE.

The special 3p ferriage rate applied to mail crossing between Cape Vincent and Kingston, which required two ferries and a land crossing. The 3p ferriage rate applied until the new U.S.-Canadian postal treaty took effect on April 6, 1851. (Image)
