23   image5c Red Orange (1c). Large margins to clear, brilliant color in the true Red Orange shade, light strike of red cancel

VERY FINE AND CHOICE USED EXAMPLE OF THE RARE 5-CENT 1847 ISSUE IN THE RED ORANGE COLOR.

This is the scarcest Scott-listed 5c 1847 shade and is rarely offered in sound four-margin condition. This stamp was expertized as Red Orange by the late Calvet M. Hahn and has the most vivid color we have encountered in years. (Image)

24 og image10c Black (2). Original gum with very slight disturbance from hinge removal, large margins to just in at top, bright shade and detailed early impression, usual light natural gum creases

FINE APPEARANCE. A RARE ORIGINAL-GUM EXAMPLE OF THE 10-CENT 1847 ISSUE.

This stamp was hinged in the space for the 10c 1875 Reproduction (Scott 4) in a National album donated to The Western Reserve Historical Society. Not only is it the original 10c 1847 (Scott 2), but it has full original gum. It was probably "found" by an amateur philatelist and misidentified (one of the rare cases in which the discoverer chooses the least valuable option!). A great stamp and great story. (Image)
