VERY FINE. A COLORFUL AND RARE 1861 ISSUE FRANKING FOR THE DOUBLE-33-CENT RATE TO CAPE OF GOOD HOPE VIA ENGLAND.
The sender's ship routing "via England p. City of Washington" corresponds to the June 21, 1862, departure of the Inman Line's City of Washington from New York and arrival at Liverpool on July 3 (datestamped at London on the following day). The 12c credit (2 x 6c) is correct for American Packet service to England. For some reason, the letter was only rated 1p (single), not 2p (double), for the British Colonial postage.
VERY FINE AND COLORFUL FRANKING FOR THE 57-CENT RATE TO CHINA BY BRITISH MAIL VIA MARSEILLES. A WONDERFUL COVER FROM THE AUGUSTINE HEARD CORRESPONDENCE.
Ex White and Knapp (lot label affixed) (Image)
