VERY FINE. A SPECTACULARLY BEAUTIFUL SUPPLEMENTARY MAIL COVER TO FRANCE PREPAID AT THE 16-CENT TREATY RATE VIA ENGLAND AND CANCELLED BY THE NEW YORK FOREIGN MAIL SHADED STAR CANCEL IN RED.

The New York Foreign Mail Shaded Star cancel is considered scarce by Weiss, but it is extremely rare in red (none reported in his census). This unusual combination of stamps prepaid the 16c rate to France (the Supplementary Mail fee was paid in cash). (Image)

The 12c credit corresponds to the 16c rate to France via England. Therefore, the 32c postage prepays the basic rate and Supplementary Mail fee. (Image)
