EXTREMELY FINE. THIS 1933 PROVISIONAL SURCHARGE ON THE HALF-BARREL WITH BUREAU OVERPRINT WAS APPARENTLY UNKNOWN TO PRIESTER. AN IMPORTANT BEER STAMP RARITY.
The Priester census reports one known example of REA166a, probably based on the stamp with the Ty. 223 surcharge offered in Tolman Part 1 (lot 3596, where incorrectly described by us as one of seven in Priester census). This combination of the Bureau overprint and handstamped surcharge is Type A in Scott (Type D in Priester). With an additional manuscript overprint, it would be classified in Scott as Type B (REA166b, or Priester Type E). We do not see any manuscript on this stamp, and the handstamped surcharge is unlike any of the types shown in Priester.

EXTREMELY FINE. THIS IS THE ONLY RECORDED EXAMPLE OF THE 1933 ONE HOGSHEAD IN BLACK WITH BUREAU SURCHARGE, SCOTT REA168. ONE OF THE RAREST OF ALL REVENUE STAMPS.
The 1933 One Hogshead Black is known without overprint (REA158) and with overprint (REA168). Priester records two examples of the former (REA158) and one of the latter (REA168). (Image)
VERY FINE. THIS SURCHARGE TYPE IS UNLISTED IN PRIESTER. THIS STAMP MIGHT WELL BE UNIQUE.
The Priester Ty. D surcharge, which includes this surcharge type, is only listed as existing on the Half-Barrel Brown Orange. (Image)
VERY FINE APPEARANCE. A RARE EXAMPLE OF THE 1933 SECOND ISSUE ONE HOGSHEAD BLACK. ONLY THREE ARE RECORDED IN PRIESTER.
The earliest reported use of any denomination is December 6, 1933, just two days prior to the date this stamp was used. (Image)
