The Penny Black plate was lettered in such a way that each stamp could be easily matched to its position. This may have been done so that any defective engravings could be quickly identified.

Magnificent holding in two large folio albums, comprising 111 complete different plate reconstructions as well as 23 others which are largely complete and seventeen others which are partly complete, few better completed plates incl. 110, 113, 121, 131, 136, 139, 144, 209, 212, five panes missing only one position to be complete incl. plates 168 and 203, eleven others missing between two and five incl. plates 199, 206, 207, 213 and 215, some others in various stages incl. plate 219 (21 stamps), 222 (41 stamps), 223 (25 stamps), 188 (171 stamps), sorry but none from Plate 77, various cancels with mostly numeral grids, few different shades, stamps generally of decent quality but some faults sure to be found

Most plate reconstructions we have seen tend to be from a mix of plates, and showing the various positions as indicated in the corner letters. This holding, which reconstructs the positions on each plate, is a major accomplishment.
