FINE-VERY FINE APPEARANCE. AN ATTRACTIVE AND RARE RECONSTRUCTED COMPOSITE SHEET OF THE GREAT BRITAIN ONE-PENNY BLACK.
The Penny Black plate was lettered in such a way that each stamp could be easily matched to its position. This may have been done so that any defective engravings could be quickly identified.
Scott Retail with no premium for any of the better plates. A similar plate reconstruction realized $21,000 hammer in our 2005 Rarities sale. (Image)
VERY FINE EXAMPLE OF THIS VERY RARE FIRST DAY USAGE OF THE WORLD'S FIRST POSTAGE STAMP.
A rare opportunity to acquire the very first "first day" cover. (Image)
VERY FINE APPEARANCE. A RARE EXAMPLE OF THE PENNY BLACK USED ON THE FIRST SUNDAY AFTER IT WAS ISSUED.
The first official day of issue, May 6, was a Wednesday. Covers used on the first Sunday are scarce, because very few post offices were open. (Image)
FRESH AND FINE BLOCK OF FOUR OF THE PENNY BLACK FROM PLATE 7, USED ON A LARGE PART OF A COVER TO LONDON.
An attractive item. (Image)
VERY FINE. A RARE AND DESIRABLE HOLDING OF PLATE RECONSTRUCTIONS OF THE GREAT BRITAIN 1864 PENNY RED ISSUE.
Most plate reconstructions we have seen tend to be from a mix of plates, and showing the various positions as indicated in the corner letters. This holding, which reconstructs the positions on each plate, is a major accomplishment.
