3217 ng ImageTellico Plains Tenn., 5c-10c Red, Se-Tenant Pair (81X2a). Unused (no gum), large margins to clear, some faint soiling not mentioned on accompanying certificate

VERY FINE AND RARE SE-TENANT PAIR OF THE TELLICO PLAINS 5-CENT AND 10-CENT POSTMASTER'S PROVISIONALS.

The Rheatown and Tellico Plains provisionals were printed by the same printer, using a typeset form of three subjects. For the Tellico Plains provisional, which probably followed the Rheatown, the post office and postmaster's names were changed, and the third subject at right was reset with a 10c denomination. Only two are known used, including one on cover (both are December 1861 dates).

With 1987 P.F. certificate (Image)

3221 og ImageUniontown Ala., 5c Green on Gray Blue (86X3). Position 2, the only one of four positions with Lobe ornaments at top and Loop ornaments at bottom, part original gum which covers approximately half the back, large margins all around, sharp impression on deeply blued paper, trivial thin speck

EXTREMELY FINE APPEARANCE. AN EXCEPTIONALLY RARE UNUSED EXAMPLE OF THE UNIONTOWN POSTMASTER’S 5-CENT PROVISIONAL ON GRAY BLUE PAPER.

The census in the Crown Uniontown book illustrates this example, which is from our 1985 Rarities sale, as well as a repaired vertical pair from an old certificate in the Philatelic Foundations's records. These are the only recorded unused examples of a Uniontown 5c stamp on either of the issued papers. We are not aware of the provenance or whereabouts of the pair.

With 1985 P.F. certificate (Image)

3222 c ImageWalterborough S.C., 10c Carmine entire (108XU2). Neat strike, matching "Walterborough S.C. May 16" (1862) circular datestamp on legal-size cover to Columbia S.C., some edge flaws and refolded at top

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. A RARE EXAMPLE OF THE WALTERBOROUGH HANDSTAMP. PERHAPS A HALF-DOZEN ARE RECORDED.

Although the Scott Catalogue lists the 10c handstamp in both Black and Carmine, neither Crown nor our own records confirm the existence of a Black entire. Of the Carmine we record six entires, all 1864 dates as follows: Jan. 15, Mar. 18, Apr. 15 (on a printed form), May 16 (offered here), Aug. 31 (turned use and charge box notation) and Nov. 9 (turned use). A cut square on a U.S. 3c Star Die entire is also known.
