FINE APPEARANCE DESPITE THE REPAIR. A RARE TÊTE-BÊCHE PAIR OF THE 1854 80-CENTIMES NAPOLEON III ISSUE ON COVER TO NEW YORK.
This cover was prepaid with a total of 3fr90c for triple the 13-decimes rate, but due 10c for the double-rate in New York (non-parallel weight progressions between France and the U.S.) It was carried by the Cunarder Africa, departing Liverpool Sep. 20, 1856 and arriving New York Oct. 3.
Scott value $42,000.00 for the tête-bêche pair on cover (Image)
VERY FINE. A FRESH AND CHOICE COVER FROM FRANCE TO NEW YORK WITH THE RARE BRITISH SOUTHAMPTON MOBILE BOX CANCEL AND A PORTLAND, MAINE, EXCHANGE OFFICE DATESTAMP.
This was carried on the Allan Line's North American to Quebec, arriving Oct. 16 (an Apr. 1, 1859 amendment to the 1848 US-GB treaty added the Allan Line as an American Packet). In addition to the triple-rarity of a British marking used to cancel the stamp, the Southampton Mobile Box and Portland Maine office datestamp, this is also an unusual cover directed via open mail during the French-U.S. Treaty period, and therefore due 21c for American Packet service (arrived in London as a loose ship letter). This was a more expensive routing and therefore seldom used. (Image)
EXTREMELY FINE. A SUPERB MIXED-ISSUE COVER TO CALIFORNIA FROM FRANCE WITH PAIRS OF THE 1853 ONE-FRANC AND 1852 25-CENTIMES NAPOLEON III ISSUES, VIA BRITISH WEST INDIES PACKET.
French Circular #67 set 25-decimes per 7.5 grams fully-paid rate to California by the Royal Mail Steam Packet Co. via St. Thomas and Chagres, effective Sep. 1, 1851. The U.S. erroneously collected 20c due on this mail. This cover was carried on RMSP steamer La Plata from Southampton on Nov. 2, arriving St. Thomas Nov. 16, then by RMSP Avon to Chagres, arriving Nov. 24. It was carried to California by the PMSC steamer John L. Stephens from Panama on Dec. 3, arriving San Francisco Dec. 16 (Image)
VERY FINE. A SPECTACULAR AND RARE FRANKING TO NEW ORLEANS WITH A STRIP OF SIX OF THE 1853 ONE-FRANC NAPOLEON III ISSUE.
This cover was prepaid with a total of 6fr50c, five-times the 13-decimes rate, but due 20c for the quadruple rate in New York (non-parallel weight progressions between France and the U.S.) It was carried by the Cunarder Canada, departing Liverpool Dec. 24, 1853 and arriving New York Jan. 6 (Image)
