EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A SPECTACULAR LARGE-MARGINED USED EXAMPLE OF THE 12-CENT 1851 ISSUE, GRADED SUPERB 98 BY P.S.E.
While Superb 98 is an exceptionally high grade for any 12c 1851 Issue, frankly we are surprised this stamp did not earn the P.S.E. "Jumbo" appellation, which would have increased its SMQ value from $3,250.00 to $4,750.00. Considering the width of the margins, the buyer of this stamp will acquire a true Jumbo example without factoring the P.S.E. premium for Jumbo into the equation.
Ex Caspary (where it realized $280). With 2015 P.S.E. certificate (Superb 98; SMQ $3,250.00) (Image)

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A MAGNIFICENT USED EXAMPLE OF THE 12-CENT 1851 ISSUE, GRADED SUPERB 98 BY P.S.E.

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. THIS IS THE FINEST KNOWN USED BLOCK OF THE 12-CENT 1851 ISSUE. A MAGNIFICENT CLASSIC IMPERFORATE MULTIPLE AND EXTREMELY RARE IN SOUND CONDITION.
Despite the existence of a fair number of used blocks of the 12c 1851 Issue, or perhaps because of it, collectors fail to appreciate the extreme rarity of used blocks in sound condition with four full margins. A review using Power Search will reveal the blocks sold through our auctions over many years, almost all of which are cut in or have faults, and none of which can be compared to the block offered in this sale. We feel confident in describing this block as the finest used multiple extant.

VERY FINE. AN ATTRACTIVE AND RARE UNITED STATES 1851 ISSUE AND HAWAIIAN KAMEHAMEHA III ISSUE MIXED-FRANKING COVER.
This cover carried on the E. L. Frost, which departed Honolulu on January 7, 1857, and arrived in San Francisco on January 31. It was carried to Panama on the regularly-scheduled monthly sailing.

EXTREMELY FINE. THIS IS THE ONLY RECORDED 12-CENT 1851 BISECT COVER FROM SONORA, CALIFORNIA, WITH THE STAMP CANCELLED BY A SEGMENTED CORK. A MAGNIFICENT 1851 ISSUE COVER FROM THE JARVIS CORRESPONDENCE.
The 12c stamp was bisected to pay the 6c transcontinental rate, effective July 1, 1851, due to a shortage of 3c and 1c stamps. Seven bisects are known used from Sonora, five of which have the Sonora straightline datestamp. This is the only cover with the segmented cork cancel. The Jarvis family, the source of the covers, owned 60 acres of land in California named Vine Springs, on which they grew grapes and made wine (http://www.cagenweb.com/tuolumne/bio4.htm).
Ex Caspary and Dick (Siegel Sale 203, lot 379). With 2015 P.F. certificate (Image)
