EXTREMELY FINE. A RARE EXAMPLE OF THIS HUNTER & CO.'S EXPRESS HANDSTAMP. ONLY THREE ARE RECORDED.
Alexander Hunter started his semi-weekly express in May 1851 and ran from Placerville to all parts of Colorado and Placer counties including Coloma, Weaverville, Mud Springs and Diamondville. He connected at first with Gregory's Express and then with Adams & Co. for San Francisco, the Atlantic states and Europe. His main office was at Placerville and in 1852 was moved to Mud Springs. Hunter sold his business to Wells, Fargo & Co. in July 1854 and became their Placerville agent. The Thomas book records only three examples of this style Hunter handstamp.
