ONE OF ONLY THREE RECORDED EXAMPLES OF THE 2-CENT WITH "CANAL" DOUBLE. This is one of the rarest errors in all of Canal Zone philately. There are very few errors where fewer than four examples are known. This is the second example we have offered; the other is the ex Plass, Drucker and Gilbert copy. 1090		1906, 5c Ultramarine & Black, "Canal" Only (24d). 7.25mm spacing, selvage at right, part tropicalized original gum VERY FINE EXAMPLE OF THIS "CANAL" ONLY VARIETY. A MAXIMUM OF TEN WERE PRINTED, OF WHICH ONLY THREE ARE KNOWN. A GREAT RARITY OF THE ISSUE. According to Canal Zone Stamps, one pane of 100 was printed with the overprint shifted left, so that the right vertical row received "Canal" only and the other 90 stamps received the "Zone Canal" variety, Scott 24e (two of the 90 are known). Only three copies of Scott 24d are recorded: 1) the example offered here; 2) in rejoined horizontal pair with "Zone Canal" variety, ex Plass, lot 487; and 3) the ex-Drucker and Gilbert example we last offered in Sale 974.
