4648 c ImageMobile Ala., 5c Blue (58X2). Horizontal pair, tied by two light strikes of "Mobile Ala." March 1862 datestamp (the exact day is too lightly struck to be read) on buff cover to Col. James Chesnut, Camden S.C., 10c Dark Blue, Hoyer & Ludwig (2b) affixed over pair of Mobile provisional stamps and tied by bold "Mobile Ala. Mar. 20, 1862" circular datestamp, receipt docketing, Molesworth's patchwork repairs, provisionals with piece out at upper right, 10c corner torn off and hinge-repaired, lifted and hinged in place to allow examination of provisional stamps, still exhibit-worthy and a very unusual use, there are a few possible scenarios to explain this cover, but the one we favor is that the sender prepaid the 10c over-500 miles rate with the provisional stamps in March 1862 (three months later than the latest 5c use recorded by Van Koppersmith; a 2c cover is recorded with a May 1863 date), but the letter was overweight and was held for additional postage, which was paid by the 10c stamp on March 20 -- its placement over the provisionals suggests that they might have been considered obsolete, but that interpretation is speculative (Image)
