10c-90c 1857-60 Issue (Scott 31-39)
Lot Sym. Lot Description
956   Image10c Green, Ty. II/III/I (32/33/31). Positions 77/87/97L1, vertical strip of three, top stamp Type II, center stamp Type III, bottom stamp Type I, rich color on bright paper, choice centering throughout, unobtrusive strikes of circular datestamp, trace of red cancel at upper left, single short perf at bottom right not mentioned on accompanying certificate

EXTREMELY FINE. A RARE USED COMBINATION STRIP OF THREE OF THE 10-CENT 1857 ISSUE, WITH TYPES I, II, AND III.

Type I only comes from the bottom row of the sheet. Three-type combination strips such as this are extremely rare -- we have offered only one other (on cover, ex Zoellner and Wagshal).

With 1989 P.F. certificate. This combination is listed but unpriced in Scott. Scott Retail as Type III and I combination pair plus single of Type II (Image)

957   Image10c Green, Ty. I (31). Position 98L1, bright shade, choice centering, wide bottom selvage, neat strike of "San Francisco Cal. Nov. 20, 1858" circular datestamp

EXTREMELY FINE. A SUPERB USED EXAMPLE OF THE 1857 10-CENT TYPE I, WITH WIDE BOTTOM SELVAGE. SCARCE WITH SUCH CHOICE CENTERING AND WITH THE WIDE SELVAGE.

Type I stamps are only found on the 20 stamps that comprise the bottom row of the plate. Due to narrow spacing on the plate and difficulties in aligning the perforating machine, stamps at the bottom of the plate usually have perforations cutting into the bottom portion of the design. This is a negative, because Type I is defined as having the design complete at bottom. The population of stamps showing the characteristic available to collectors is extremely limited -- this is the only used example with such wide selvage we have offered since keeping computerized records.

With 1989 P.F. certificate (Image)
