THIS MIXED-FRANKING COVER FROM HAWAII IS THE EARLIEST DOCUMENTED USE OF THE 1857 5-CENT KAMEHAMEHA III SECOND PRINTING ON THIN WHITE WOVE PAPER AND THE LATEST USE OF THE "HONOLULU*U.S. POSTAGE PAID" DATESTAMP.

This cover was carried on the schooner Vaquero, which departed Honolulu on June 27, 1857, with two mail bags. It returned with a broken mast and sailed again on June 30 with more mail. Five of the recorded 5c on 13c surcharge covers were carried in this mail, which was datestamped at Honolulu on June 27. The Vaquero arrived in San Francisco on July 16, and mail for Panama was datestamped on July 20. Gregory identifies this cover as the earliest use of the Second Printing 5c Kamehameha III Issue and the last mail that was datestamped with the old-style "Honolulu*U.S. Postage Paid" datestamp.

FINE APPEARANCE. A SCARCE COMBINATION OF THE 1857 5-CENT KAMEHAMEHA III SECOND PRINTING AND UNITED STATES 12-CENT 1851 ISSUE AND THE ONLY RECORDED MIXED-FRANKING COVER WITH BOTH THE GILMAN & COMPANY OVAL AND "OVERLAND" ROUTE DIRECTIVE MARKING.

This cover was carried on the bark Yankee, which departed Honolulu on Dec. 6, 1859, and arrived in San Francisco on Dec. 24. It arrived too late for the regular twice-monthly sailing for Panama and was marked with the "OVERLAND" handstamp to indicate its late arrival and alternate routing on the next Butterfield stagecoach. The San Francisco Dec. 26 postmark date corresponds with the regular Monday stagecoach departure.

Fred Gregory records only two examples of this forwarder's marking, both on outbound covers used in November and December 1859. Perlman records 14 covers from Hawaii with the "OVERLAND" handstamp, including six with U.S.-Hawaii mixed frankings (all 5c and 12c 1851).

The addressee was the wife of David Cochran, a whaling captain from New Bedford. This cover was mailed by him at Honolulu while he was in command of the whaler Oliver Crocker. Gilman & Co. provided the envelope (with their seal) and arranged for forwarding by mail on the next outbound vessel.

This cover was carried on the bark Yankee, which departed Honolulu on Oct. 3, 1859, and arrived in San Francisco on Oct. 21. It arrived one day too late for the regular twice-monthly sailing for Panama and was marked with the "OVERLAND" handstamp to indicate its late arrival and alternate routing on the next Butterfield stagecoach. The San Francisco Oct. 24 postmark date corresponds with the regular Monday stagecoach departure. Perlman records 14 covers from Hawaii with the "OVERLAND" handstamp, including six with U.S.-Hawaii mixed frankings (all 5c and 12c 1851). The addressee, Almira Lucilla Bartow, was the sister of Lahaina postmaster Cornelius S. Bartow.
