VERY FINE. A PHENOMENAL EARLY BASEBALL-RELATED ILLUSTRATED COVER. THIS IS THE ONLY EXAMPLE OF ITS KIND THAT WE HAVE EVER ENCOUNTERED. AN IMPORTANT ADVERTISING COVER.

Baseball as a sport enjoyed a tremendous growth in popularity in the 1860's. According to Wikipedia, by 1865 approximately 100 clubs were members of the National Association of Baseball Players (NABBP). By 1867 this number had mushroomed to 400, with clubs across the country. No doubt Wentworth's was in business to supply the growing needs of these clubs. (Image)

VERY FINE STRIKE OF THE DESIRABLE ANDREW JOHNSON TOMBSTONE WITH SKULL FANCY CANCEL. VERY RARE USED ON A COVER.

Andrew Johnson assumed the presidency after the assassination of Lincoln in 1865. He was unable to secure the nomination for the 1868 election, partly because he had alienated many politicians and the public. This sentiment is reflected in the fancy cancel.
