[Hotel] Rathbun's Hotel/ Broadway / New York, Very Fine strike blue oval handstamp on 1846 folded letter postmarked red "New-York/ 10 cts./ 25/ Mar" circular datestamp and matching "Paid"; the
letter is written by Benjamin Rathbun to John B. Macy in Cincinnati. Estimate $200 - 300
Benjamin Rathbun, a master builder, constructed nearly 100 buildings in Buffalo N.Y. in the 1930s. In 1937 he was convicted in a forgery
scheme perpetrated by his brother Lyman and Lyman's son, amounting to more than $1.5 million worth of forged promissory notes. He consequently served five years in prison, after which he moved to New York City and began a hotel
business.
John H. Macy was a U.S. Congressman from Wisconsin (1853-1855), but prior to that he lived in Buffalo, then in Cincinnati, where he was one of the founders of the city of Toledo. (Image)
