This is an outstanding usage with two very interesting features. This loophole was closed by the Act of February 27, 1861 that eliminated the mileage provision and required 10¢ postage on any letter crossing the Rocky Mountains. (Image1)

THE ONLY RECORDED EXAMPLE OF THE TALBOT COURT HOUSE COLONIAL POSTMARK, AND AN EXCEPTIONALLY RARE USE IN COMBINATION WITH THE SCARCE PHILADELPHIA STRAIGHTLINE. Talbot Court House is an old Colonial town dating back to the early Federal period. Quakerism began to impact the town in the late 1600s when the Third Haven Meeting House, circa 1682-1684, was constructed. The House stands today as the oldest religious building still in use in the United States and the earliest dated building in Maryland. It received its name through an Act of the Assembly of the Province of Maryland dated November 4, 1710 entitled "An Act for the Building of a Court House for Talbot County, at Armstrong's Old Field near Pitt's Bridge" founded the town. The Court House was constructed and served the Maryland General Court and later became known as the "Capitol of the Eastern Shore". A. Pitt's Bridge crossed a stream forming the headwaters of the Tred Avon or Third Haven River. An act of legislation in 1788, renamed the town and county seat as Easton. Steamboats started plying the waters of Tred Avon River around 1816 and utilized Easton Point until their demise in 1932. (Image1)

Scott No. 1-2  Estimate $10,000 - 15,000. THE MOST IMPORTANT AND HIGHLY SOUGHT AFTER PRECANCELS IN U.S. PHILATELY. According to Wall, for the 5¢ 1847 there are only two covers and three off-cover stamps, and the 10¢ 1847 there are only four covers and five off-cover stamps with the red Wheeling Va. control grid. Most of the known copies have defects. The red grid was apparently applied once to every four stamps, at the center of each block in the sheet. The purpose of the marking has never been established conclusively because used examples were cancelled by the customary blue "Paid" or grid cancels upon usage. Therefore, the Wheeling red grid is not considered to be a true pre-cancellation, which would suffice for mailing without further cancelling. It perhaps served to provide security against Post Office theft. (Image1)

37 11A image1852, 3¢ Dull Red, Type II, tied by "Cleveland, O., Dec 6" cds on buff cover to Brooklyn, N.Y. with spectacular Uncle Tom's Cabin, By Harriet Beecher Stove book illustration ad corner card of publishers Jewett, Proctor & Worthington, cover silked, expertly sealed tear at right, Very Fine. Scott No. 11A  Estimate $5,000 - 7,500. A REMARKABLE ILLUSTRATED DESIGN TAKEN FROM THE FRONT COVER ILLUSTRATION OF UNCLE TOM'S CABIN. A UNIQUE COVER PROMOTING ONE OF THE MOST INFLUENTIAL BOOKS PUBLISHED IN THE UNITED STATES. Harriet Beecher Stowe's best known novel, "Uncle Tom's Cabin" (1852), changed forever how Americans viewed slavery, the system that treated people as property. It demanded that the United States deliver on the promise of freedom and equality, galvanized the abolition movement and contributed to the outbreak of the Civil War. As a young wife and mother living in Cincinnati, Harriet Beecher Stowe met former and fugitive enslaved people. Cincinnati, then the western frontier of the United States, was an ethnically and culturally vibrant city. On the Ohio River across from Kentucky, a slave state, the city exposed Stowe to the public face of slavery. Stowe knew about slavery before she moved to Ohio. Her own grandmother kept African American servants who had probably originally been enslaved, and her father had preached in favor of the colonization movement, supporting the creation of Liberia as a settling point for freed people. But in Ohio, Stowe heard first hand stories from former enslaved people; witnessed slavery while visiting Kentucky; and employed fugitives in her home. When Harriet and Calvin learned that their servant was actually a runaway in danger of being returned to slavery, Calvin and Harriet's brother Henry Ward Beecher helped her escape and reach Canada and legal freedom. The first installment of "Uncle Tom's Cabin" appeared on June 5, 1851 in the anti-slavery newspaper, "The National Era". Stowe enlisted friends and family to send her information and scoured freedom narratives and anti-slavery newspapers for first hand accounts as she composed her story. In 1852 the serial was published as a two volume book. "Uncle Tom's Cabin" was a best seller in the United States, Britain, Europe and Asia with sales of 300,00 in the first year and was translated into over 60 languages. (Image1)
