Estimate  $200 - 300. The Embargo Act of 1807 was a general Embargo that made illegal any and all exports from the United States. It was sponsored by President Thomas Jefferson and enacted by Congress. The goal was to force Britain and France to respect American rights during the Napoleonic Wars. The U.S. wanted to remain neutral and trade with both sides, but neither side wanted the other to have the American supplies. The American goal was to use economic coercion to avoid war, and punish Britain due to the thousands of impressed American seamen. The policy was highly unpopular with shipping interests, and historians have judged it a failure. It was repealed as Jefferson left office in 1809. (Image1)

Printed circular dated Nov. 1st 1814, "I have been deprived of the pleasure of addressing you, for want of suitable opportunities, since the memorable events of last spring; which in changing the political relations of Europe, restored at the same time this country to the septer of the Bourbons… The King has declared Marseilles a free commercial port. By a late decision of this government any vessels of England or the United States which may on the passage have captured the ships, or property of either nation are not admitted to an entry in the ports of France: They may come and take refreshments, but cannot land either their original cargoes or prize goods: thus letters of marque destined to France with cargoes are vitually prohibited capturing on the high seas; although their prizes are directed for the United States. Europe is anxiously awaiting the resolves of the Congress at Vienna. The task of harmonizing the various and jarring interests of rival potentates - ambitious all for power an extensive dominion, is truly herculean. It is problematical to many whether the high powers will be able to form a sincere accord of a nature to secure to their wearied subjects an interval of peaceful repose sufficient to repair the ruinous disasters which have befallen them so many years past. Reports are various and contradictory respecting the negotiations carried on at Ghent; we have no opinion of a favorable result. (Image1)
