2614   image(Postal Card Forerunner) Hyman L. Lipman, Philadelphia, Forerunner Postal Card Essay (Unstated Value) Light Blue on White Wove, bearing 1¢ ultramarine (145) tied by segmented cork cancel, addressed to West Chester Pa., reverse with printed Philadelphia dry goods advertisement on reverse; light tone spot at lower right, still Very Fine. UPSS No. UX1E-B var. Estimate  $4,000 - 6,000. AN EXCEPTIONALLY RARE POSTAL USE OF THE LIPMAN FORERUNNER ESSAY, ONLY A FEW USED EXAMPLES ARE BELIEVED TO EXIST. Although Lipman applied for a patent, it was never allowed as entrepreneur John P. Charleton of Philadelphia had already secured copyright for the earliest private mailing card in 1861. Most Lipman cards as a result contain fine print contributing legal credit to J.P. Charlton. There is reason to believe that, in time, Charleton himself came to to condone "Lipman's Postal Cards" because eventually he used them for his own correspondence. Lipman was the first to carry through the first commercial application of the private mailing cards, years prior to the Government issued Postal Card in May 1873. It should be noted that although the United States invented the postal card, Austria would be the first to issue one. By the end of 1870, Great Britain, Wurttemmberg, Finland and Switzerland would follow suit. Following legislation in 1872, Lipman cards were confiscated by post offices and sent to the Dead Letter Office, thus explaining the rarity of existing used examples.A companion card with identical message is illustrated in Fricke's "A Contemporary Account of the First United States Postal Card 1870-75" on page 6. The recent Siegel auction of the Georgian Collection of United States Postal Cards had a similar example of this used Lipman forerunner essay that realized $7,187. (Image1)

A SCARCE PAIR OF COLORADO TERRITORY USAGES, THE JUN. 7TH EXAMPLE BEING THE EARLIEST RECORDED TERRITORIAL USE OF THE 1873 1¢ POSTAL CARD. The June 7th card is featured in "A Contemporary Account of the First United States Postal Card, 1870-1875" by Charles A. Fricke on page 68 as a possible first day usage for Denver. As a matched pair, both of these cards were written by "Jas. Marshall Paul," most likely a relative of the addressee, and indicate that Paul may have carried the pre-addressed cards in his travels from Philadelphia to Colorado Territory. The Jun. 7th Denver card notes his arrival, then states "No shipment from mine this week - Will shut down probably for repairs - Will write from Fairplay.". (Image1)

2663 UX17 imagePostal Card, 1902, 1¢ black on buff, the "full-face McKinley", mint card, without printed address, wonderfully crisp and fresh, Very Fine and choice. Scott No. UX17  $17,500. A REMARKABLE AND EXCEEDINGLY RARE MINT EXAMPLE OF THE 1¢ BLACK FULL-FACE MCKINLEY POSTAL CARD IN SUCH PRISTINE CONDITION. As an indication of rarity, the Scott Catalogue prices the card without printed address at $17,500, versus $3,250 with the printed address. Albert Daggett, the contractor for the printing of the Full Face card, was never able to satisfy the Post Office in Washington due to the sub-standard quality of his production. All submitted samples were rejected and as a result the entire stock of 1,625,000 cards was ordered destroyed by the Postmaster General on April 29, 1902. Somehow, to the dismay of the USPOD and to the pleasure of philatelists, a box of 500 was inadvertently shipped to New York City and sold by the New York City Post Office to the firm of Booth, Dailey & Ivins, which held the city contract for dumping garbage at sea. They were shortly thereafter pre-printed with their address and garbage dumping information on the reverse to be filled out by the tug captain. As a result of the printing there remained no mint cards for collectors, although a few examples escaped preprinting with 18 currently recorded. (Image1)

Scott No. UX36  $75,000. THOUGHT TO BE THE FINEST OF ONLY THREE CONFIRMED EXAMPLES OF THE ERROR SURCHARGE ON THE 1911 2¢ GRANT INTERNATIONAL POSTAL CARDS. THE KEY ITEM IN THE FIELD OF POSTAL CARD COLLECTING. As part of the postal rate increases that were put in place to help fund World War I, the domestic postal card rate was increased from 1¢ to 2¢. New 2¢ Jefferson cards (Scott UX29 and UX30) were created to meet this rate. When the war ended, prewar rates were restored, including the 1¢ card rate. In at least 46 cities, leftover 2¢ cards were subsequently surcharged "1 cent" using special revaluing dies that were fitted into local canceling machines. The country was being flooded with with revalued postal cards from many different cities and dies, but a few examples of genuine error entered the mail stream from the Los Angeles post office, where the 1¢ surcharge was applied not just to the proper 2¢ Jefferson cards, but also to a few copies of the 2¢ Grant international card of 1911. The card offered here was discovered in 1992 by an auction describer in a balance lot that the owner had suggested contained nothing but junk, and last sold in 2010 for the record price of $109,250.The four recorded examples including the unconfirmed:1. Mar. 21, 1921. Long Beach Cal. to local city address. Long Beach Library notice, ex-Falberg, the card offered here.2. Mar. 22, 1921. Long Beach Cal. to local city address. Long Beach Library notice, ex-Clark H. Stevens, Scarsdale.3. 1921, Elk Club notice, ex-Dr. Mitchell4. 1921, Elks Club notice, discovery copy by Elks Club member, perhaps discarded and lost to philately as not seen since 1923. (Image1)

Scott No. UY8  Estimate $150 - 200. May 1917, the town of Hot Springs had a population of 650 but soon the number would increase with the addition of almost 2200 German prisoners. This would be the largest World War I prison camp in the United States at the time. The Mountain Park Hotel had been a thriving business until the outbreak of World War I when travel to the hotel slowed considerably. The owner Col. Rumbough negotiated a contract with the War Department to house Germans, most of whom were civilians and comprised of the crews of the German commercial ships which had taken cover in American ports when Great Britain declared war on Germany in 1914. Included in the group were members of a German orchestra as well as the crew of the world’s largest ship, the "Vaterland." Because they were civilians, they could not be called "prisoners’ of-war" but were named "enemy aliens" by the Department of Immigration. Consequently, 2200 passengers, officers and crew members came by train to Hot Springs and spent the remaining 19 months of the war in the internment camp. (Image1)
